Gender Disparity in Education

There is a great gender gap in the education system of Pakistan. Girls are not given equal rights to get an education as the boys have access to learning. This disparity is not created today, Pakistan is facing it for a very long time. In this article, we will explore the extent of this gender equality in the education system of Pakistan. Secondly, we will talk about what things hinder the education of females. All these issues will be addressed in the context of empowering the girl’s education.

1. Access to education

The inequality in the education sector is caused by the unequal access of girls and boys to education. The hindrance in access to education is because of many reasons. Early marriages, long distances to school, poverty, cultural norms, safety, and girls’ security contributed a lot to the low enrollment rate of females in education. This should be dealt with, with great care, the government should intervene and start awareness programs, provide a safe way of commute, and should give financial support to those who cannot study but want no study.

2. Socio-cultural barriers:

Pakistan is one of the male-dominated countries. Which focuses more on educating the males. For a long time, the barriers to entering and accessing education for female was very difficult but nowadays this conception is changing as the demographics of the country is changing. Limited decision power was given to females. Since female has a great ratio in the population, empowering them could lead society towards betterment in terms of poverty equality and economics.

3. Quality of education:

Gender disparity creates a big difference in education quality. Poor infrastructure, lack of competitive teachers, and limited resources hinder the education of females the most. For businesses in providing the study material, most of the time if parents cannot afford the course for all the children, they will buy it for a male child, and a female child is asked to stay at home. The same is the case at school the free distribution of the books starts with the boy’s section and whatever is left behind is then distributed amongst the females.

4. Retention and completion rate:

If we see the retention rate of females for education is very low, there are many reasons females cannot continue their education. Sometimes the parents get their daughter married at a very early age, or sometimes it’s the financial cause, in all the way females are the most affected by every factor in getting an education. The dropout ratio for the female student is higher than that of males.

5. Empowering women and girls:

Gender equality beyond the classroom could only be achieved when females become empowered to continue their education. The empowerment of women includes developing their skills and knowledge sets. Provide them with sex education, promote leadership opportunities for females, and make social awareness of equality amongst the gender in getting the education right.

Conclusion:

Gender disparity is a very important topic to be discussed and resolve it hinders the development of society and causes the barrier to the transformation of society.
